Note from the editor: This year was significant for Marc Jacobs as he celebrated his 40th anniversary in the fashion industry and became the inaugural guest editor for American Vogue. As we wrap up 2024, we’re taking an archival look at the designer’s journey. The fall 1999 collection, showcased in SoHo on February 15, 1999, has been digitized as part of Vogue Runway’s initiative to preserve the history of fashion shows.
A subdued color palette of browns, grays, and lavenders perfectly complemented the understated ambiance of Marc Jacobs’ fall 1999 collection. Among the standout pieces were the chunky knits, featuring hoodie-style cardigans, pullovers, and long, striped scarves. The tailoring subtly incorporated elements from military and western styles, including cow-print skirts, while the more formal pieces retained a sense of modesty. Apron-like dresses, empire-waist gowns, and Hester Prynne–inspired capelets led Melanie Rickey of The Independent to describe the overall aesthetic as “prairie chic meets rustic street.”
