The white cast problem is solved. It took about twenty years of formulators working on it, but the sunscreen that layers invisibly under makeup, works across all skin tones, and provides genuine SPF protection now exists at every price point. What remains is knowing which ones are actually worth buying.
In France, where I trained as an esthetician, sunscreen is considered a skincare essential rather than a beach product. The French pharmacie carries more sunscreen SKUs than any other skincare category. La Roche-Posay\’s Anthelios line — which holds a near-mythical status among European dermatologists — has been the gold standard for face sunscreen since the late 1990s. Everything else in this category is trying to achieve what that line already does.
Here are the best face sunscreens for summer 2026, at every price point.
What to Look For
SPF rating: SPF 30 is the minimum for daily use. SPF 50 is better. SPF 70 is the pharmaceutical-grade protection that the Anthelios line is built around. Higher SPF becomes increasingly marginal in efficacy beyond 70, but the formulations at that level tend to be the most advanced in other respects.
Broad spectrum: Protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning). Non-negotiable. If a product doesn\’t say “broad spectrum,” it\’s not providing full protection.
Mineral vs. chemical: Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are the primary cause of white cast — they work by physically reflecting UV light, and the zinc or titanium particles are what you\’re seeing. Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV radiation and don\’t leave the same cast. Many modern formulas use a hybrid approach.
What not to compromise on: Texture. A sunscreen you won\’t wear daily because of how it feels is not doing anything. The best sunscreen is the one you actually apply every morning.
The Drugstore Tier ($15–$25)
EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 — $44
The most recommended face sunscreen by dermatologists in the US. The niacinamide in the formula calms redness and supports the skin barrier; the zinc oxide is formulated to be nearly invisible. Works on all skin tones. The slight foam texture feels unusual at first but layers beautifully under makeup.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55 — $14
The best drugstore option for those who run warm or have oily skin. The dry-touch finish controls shine throughout the day, and the invisible finish works on all skin tones. Apply it liberally — the SPF rating assumes a generous application that most people underdo.

Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 — $19
Formulated specifically for deeper skin tones, with a moisturizing formula that absorbs without any cast whatsoever. Works beautifully as a morning moisturizer-sunscreen step.

The Mid Tier ($30–$45)
La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Correct SPF 70 — $40
The reference product in this category. The formula layers invisibly across all skin tones, doesn\’t pill under makeup, doesn\’t cause breakouts, and provides SPF 70 protection — among the highest available in the US. I have recommended this sunscreen more times than any other product in my career. Buy it, use it daily, and don\’t think about it again.
Shop La Roche-Posay
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 — $38
The makeup-primer-like option. The slightly tacky finish provides a surface that foundation and tinted moisturizer adhere to beautifully, and the invisible finish works across all skin tones. Best for those who want their sunscreen to do double duty as a primer.

Bioderma Photoderm MAX Aquafluid SPF 50+ — $32
The French pharmacy alternative to La Roche-Posay for those who prefer an ultra-lightweight texture. The aquafluid formula has essentially no weight on the skin and controls oil effectively throughout the day.

The Premium Tier ($50+)
Augustinus Bader The Cream Cleansing Gel (with SPF) — $) *(note: check current Augustinus Bader SPF product)*
Augustinus Bader\’s skincare line is built around TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex 8), a proprietary formula that supports skin cell renewal. Their SPF products combine that technology with protection.
DIOR Forever Skin Glow Cushion SPF 20 — $68
For those who want the luxury SPF experience. The cushion format provides coverage, hydration, and SPF in one step. Not a replacement for a dedicated SPF underneath, but works as a top-up throughout the day.

The Application Rule That Changes Everything
Most people apply 25–50% of the amount of sunscreen needed to achieve the stated SPF protection. The standard for a face is approximately a quarter teaspoon — about the size of a nickel. If you\’re applying less than that, you\’re not getting the SPF on the bottle.
Apply generously, let it sit for 60 seconds before applying makeup, and reapply after prolonged outdoor exposure. Those three habits, done consistently, are more impactful than which specific SPF 50 you choose.
