Hair Full of Secrets
Our hair care routines are deeply personal. From our first salon experience to the first product we fell in love with, every moment is a part of our hair story. At Byrdie, we’re fascinated by the entire journey—the styling triumphs and the lessons we’ve learned from wash day disasters. With Hair Full of Secrets, we’re bringing you the tried-and-true products, rituals, and recommendations your favorite celebrities, founders, and influencers swear by.
Rico Nasty has never met a hairstyle she wouldn’t commit to. The mosh-pit diva switches’ dos the way most people switch outfits—often, intentionally, and without overthinking it. She’s gone from a pixie to crochet pigtails to sculpted spikes in a matter of days. Not having a signature has become her signature, as fans can always expect something avant-garde and unconventional.
Beyond the styles themselves, tone is perhaps the most important aspect of her look. Her wigs, extensions, and natural hair are brought to life through color. Lime green, hot pink, candy blue, riot red—you can’t think of Rico without thinking about hair color. So, it makes sense that the star would team up with fellow rocker Hayley Williams’ hair-color-for-all brand, Good Dye Young, on a shade that’s, well, Nasty.
The semi-permanent hue—named after Rico’s own moniker—is a punk purple inspired by chaos, energy, and attitude. The description asserts it’s not indigo, not lavender—just unmistakably punk purple. Rico tells us the color is inspired by her love of the late Prince (“the ultimate GOAT”) and is a sweet nod to her childhood longing to experiment with dye. “I wasn’t allowed to bleach [my hair],” she says. “I could only use temporary dyes or hair paints, and I’d be so pissed because the color wouldn’t always show up. But we tested [the “Nasty” hair color] on black hair, and I’m so excited because you can still see the color, even if you don’t like bleaching your hair.”
Ahead, Rico dishes on hair confidence, having no regrets, and her real-life routine.

A Hairstyle That Makes Her Feel the Most Powerful
“I think when I wear my curly hair, I feel most like myself. It makes me feel free. I love that curly hair has imperfections and different layers.”
If Her Album, LETHAL-ER, Were a Hair Look
“I would actually describe it as nasty. It has a super villain-y vibe to it—a little evil undertone, which is something I’ve gotten since the beginning of time. I’ve always been compared to Harley Quinn, and I think of purple, orange, and green.”

On How Her Hair and Music Intersect
“Hair ties things together. People always call it a crown, and I think that’s for a reason. There’s pride in your hair—whatever way you decide to wear it, it’s a statement. My music is always a statement, so naturally, like I take risks with my sound, I have to take risks with my hair. You just can’t care—you have to be devoted to the risk.”
Her Hair Muses
“My hairstylist, Tyla Thomas. I love her work, even when it’s not on me. She takes the time to understand what I ask for. She never fails; she’s a true representation of her craft. I remember the first Rolling Loud we did together, and she gave me a mullet—it was so sick. I also love Tokyo Stylez and Law Roach. If I’m ever having a dream, it’s probably about Law’s hair. It puts me at ease.”
On Hair Regrets
“I’m good with everything because I love the idea of growth. I love people going back and looking at pictures of me and thinking, ‘Oh yeah, the budget was low.’ I’m not mad at that—that’s what makes people want to become artists even more, the transformation. All in all, I’ve always loved my hair.”

Her Real-Life Hair Routine
“I wash my hair once a week or every two weeks. I’m pretty low-maintenance. I try to do low-tension hairstyles like a slick low bun or braid, or I’ll wear my hair out. Sometimes people will see me out and not even know it’s me because I have regular hair. It’s my camouflage. I take pride in doing my hair daily—it makes me feel good. I have a rule: I’m only allowed to wear a bonnet all day one day out of the week. Other than that, I need to do my hair—but it doesn’t have to be anything crazy.”
Her 2026 Beauty Mantra
“Make them watch. That’s it. It’s all about less explaining and more just being. A lot of times, I’m questioned when I do different things, and it makes me shy away from them. This year, I want to have more fun—especially with my Instagram feed. I’m getting back to existing in the moment and making them watch.”
