“My mom, she fully believed in me the whole time. I remember dad did the dad thing at one point where he was like, ‘You’ve got to have a plan B because this isn’t necessarily feasible. And I think I said something like, ‘My plan B is the Oscars.’”
And it’s clear that Jacob had the right idea. Although Sean Penn ultimately took home the Oscar, Frankenstein did win Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.
It was an earned trophy, with the 28-year-old spending at least 10 hours every day getting into makeup alone, which consisted of wearing over two dozen prosthetics.
“I told him, ‘Look, it’s like when a priest is getting dressed, there are many layers to the robes and the ceremonial guard,” director Guillermo del Toro explained to E! News in October. “You have to think, ‘This is your Ceremonial Guard. You’re invoking the Creature.'”
The filmmaker continued, “And the result is heartbreaking and beautiful. It’s a really naked performance—emotionally so close to innocence that it breaks your heart.”
