In 2024, the fashion world was abuzz with activity – and we’re not merely referencing the seemingly endless turnover of Creative Directors (though that certainly played a role). From celebrities making headlines with eye-catching, paparazzi-ready outfits to the supermodels of the 2020s fiercely competing run after run, we’ve put together a recap of the most pivotal fashion moments of the year, just for you.

Maison Margiela Artisanal 2024

John Galliano’s last collection (which we didn’t know at the time) for Maison Margiela was undeniably the most discussed collection of the year (and possibly for the next decade). The 2024 Artisanal collection showcased Galliano’s extraordinary flair for theatrical design, featuring everything from tightly cinched corsetry to a daringly intricate merkin that left many stunned. This dream collection boasted a dream team, including captivating choreography by Pat Boguslawski, appearances by fan-favorite Leon Dame and the stunning latex doll representation Gwendoline Christie, along with long-time collaborator Pat McGrath, whose incredible “glass skin” makeup became a sensation in its own right. This collection was Galliano’s poignant farewell, a moment that we have yet to shake from our minds.

The Ongoing Musical Chair Creative Director Saga

If a year-end review were created for the fashion sector, it would show that 11 designers left their posts, including one retirement (Dries Van Noten), while 10 designers were brought in, one of whom was promoted from within (Julian Klausner for Dries Van Noten; although Michael Rider of CELINE had previously worked at the House under Phoebe Philo). Notable highlights from this year’s Creative Director appointments include Alessandro Michele at Maison Valentino (who, let’s remember, unveiled his debut collection via lookbook on the same day as Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2025 menswear runway), Sarah Burton’s appointment at Givenchy (which the industry largely considered a sensible decision), and of course, Matthieu Blazy stepping into the prestigious role at Chanel. While we have not heard further news this year, might 2025 bring back John Galliano, Hedi Slimane, and Pierpaolo Piccioli to new houses? Only time will tell.

What could be better than a press tour styled by Law Roach with Zendaya at the forefront? How about not one, but two stylish press tours featuring Zendaya! On one side, we saw the tennis-chic, Thom Browne-themed looks complemented by archival pieces from Louis Vuitton during the Challengers press tour. On the other hand, we were treated to what may arguably be the most memorable red carpet moment of the year, donning the archival Mugler “Gynoid” from the Autumn/Winter 1995 Couture collection. Which one steals your heart?

Alex Consani, the supermodel and TikTok’s beloved “people’s princess,” made history this year by becoming the first openly transgender woman nominated for the Model of the Year category at the Fashion Awards, and she also took home the award. Let’s hear it for Alex Consani!

Following a few seasons of intimate presentations in his Paris residence, the iconic Rick Owens made a grand return to his signature Fashion Week venue, the Palais de Tokyo. This show was a splendid celebration of unity, featuring approximately 200 students and loyal fans participating in a spectacular display that felt like both a continuation and a revitalization of the Rick-verse.

Jonathan Anderson’s I TOLD YA T-shirt

Every so often, a fashion item bursts onto the scene to such an extent that even your friends back home, who may not follow trends, are familiar with it – that’s the case with the “I TOLD YA” tee. Created by the dapper Jonathan Anderson for LOEWE, this iconic t-shirt from Challengers was initially inspired by John F. Kennedy Jr., who wore the graphic design back in the ‘90s. However, as recognizable as it may be, perhaps don’t share the price of the LOEWE piece with your hometown friends.

Anok Yai’s Bride Walk

We couldn’t possibly recap the year’s standout fashion moments without mentioning Anok Yai, particularly her viral (and spontaneous) bride walk that concluded the VETEMENTS Spring/Summer 2025 collection. Let’s give Anok the applause she rightfully deserves (and a Model of the Year award too).

Bella Hadid’s Surprise Runway Appearance for Saint Laurent

Could it be? Is that the Bella Hadid strutting down the runway at the Saint Laurent SS25 show after a two-year break? Yes, indeed it was! The supermodel took a break from her chaps and cowboy hat to reclaim her place in Parisian glam, wearing a 90s slouchy power suit designed by Anthony Vaccarello, styled with a slicked-back bun and tinted shades. And guess what? We all loved it.

Chappell Roan, That’s It

Do we need to say more? Alright, if you insist. Chappell Roan as the Statue of Liberty at the Governors Ball. Chappell Roan’s bubblegum princess look during her NPR Tiny Desk performance. Chappell Roan at the Universal Music Group’s Grammy After Party. Once again, do we need to elaborate?
