Bumble & bumble to Close Iconic Midtown East Salon on June 27

End of an era.

The Bumble and bumble Midtown East salon will officially close its doors on June 27.

The salon’s origins date back to 1977 when Michael Gordon opened a small location on 57th street, which later burned down. That was followed by a space on 56th Street that has long been considered the Estée Lauder Cos.-owned brand’s heritage salon.

Gordon, who became a highly sought-after stylist, launched a product line in the ’90s, which caught the attention of the Estée Lauder Cos. The beauty company took a majority stake in the hair brand in 2000.

The Bumble and bumble Meatpacking salon will remain open. It has been in the neighborhood since 2002.

In the second quarter of the year, the Estée Lauder Cos. said hair care net sales returned to growth, increasing 5 percent, in part helped by the initial shipments for Bumble and bumble’s SalonCentric launch in February.

It announced the partnership with SalonCentric, the largest U.S. distributor of salon professional products, in January. It entails Bumble and bumble’s products being available through SalonCentric’s 850+ stores, and online.

At the time, Shane Wolf, president of global brands, Bumble and bumble and Aveda at the Estée Lauder Cos., said: “This expanded access, aligned with ELC’s Beauty Reimagined strategic vision to increase our presence in preferred channels, allows us to drive adoption behind the chair and build stronger, long-term relationships with professionals nationwide. It’s a deliberate step to advance our position and reaffirm our commitment to hairdressers and the professional community we helped build.”
