The phrase “spring nails” likely brings to mind jellybean pastels and sweet floral nail art, less so a shiny, inky manicure. But Charlize Theron is here to prove that moody, gothy nails can be just the thing for the season, especially if you’re not quite ready for those May flowers yet.
For the New York City premiere of her Netflix film Apex, the Oscar winner hit the red carpet in what seems to be the antithesis of a spring manicure: a deep, vampy shade that isn’t quite black, but rather a black cherry shade—not exactly a traditional April hue, but that’s what makes it feel so cool and refreshing.
But wait, there’s more! At first, it looks like she’s wearing just a simple, one-color manicure on her short, squoval-shaped nails, but look a little closer. (You may need a magnifying glass, or a few zoom-ins to see it.) Is that a baby blue micro-French tip we see? It’s so thin and delicate, you’d definitely miss it at first glance, but upon closer examination, it’s absolutely there. You gotta love a delightful little surprise like that, especially when it’s so unexpected. Plus, the combination of deep, brownish-black polish and a light blue tip is such a good one.

Nails aside, we’d be remiss not to mention Theron’s mini bob, which she wore very deeply parted to one side with some casual-cool texture. She paired the bob and manicure with minimal eye makeup and a bright red lip that just so happened to match the red carpet backdrop, adding vivid color to her ruffled collar and black jacket combo.
While it’s so much fun to ditch your dark winter polishes in favor of more colorful options come spring, who’s to say you can’t give those gothier shades a spin come April and May? Theron’s ultra-dainty micro-French is a total masterclass.
